Ole Miss home games turn Oxford into a different town for a day. The Grove fills up, parking lots that are half-empty on a normal Tuesday are packed bumper to bumper, and getting anywhere near campus takes a lot longer than usual. If your car breaks down on a game day, a few things are worth knowing.
Why game days are different
Two things change on a game day: how many cars are competing for the same roads and lots, and how long it takes anyone — including us — to physically get to you. A trip that takes ten minutes on a normal weekday can take much longer when the roads around campus and the Grove are packed with game-day traffic.
That doesn’t mean help isn’t coming. It means the honest answer to “how long will it take” is longer than it would be on a quiet Tuesday, and it’s worth knowing that going in.
What actually causes most game-day calls
- Batteries drained from sitting. A car parked all weekend for tailgating, especially with anyone running accessories off the battery, can come back to a dead battery by the time the game’s over.
- Running low on gas before or after the game. Long waits in game-day traffic burn more fuel than a normal drive, and it’s easy to leave with less of a cushion than you think.
- Not being able to find your own car. This isn’t something we can help with, but it’s worth taking a photo of your parking location or setting a pin on your phone before you head into the Grove.
What to do if you break down on a game day
- Call as early as you notice a problem. The earlier we know, the more we can plan around road closures and traffic.
- Give us a specific location. “Near the Grove” isn’t as helpful as a specific lot, deck, or cross street.
- Be patient with the estimate. We’ll be honest about how long game-day traffic is likely to add, rather than giving you a number we know isn’t realistic.
After the game
If you’re heading out of town after a game, don’t wait until your tank is nearly empty to think about gas — game-day traffic leaving Oxford can turn a normal drive into a much longer one, and running out of gas in that kind of traffic is worth avoiding entirely.
